Client: Handwritten Records

Project Type: Artist Website (Music · Touring · Fan Engagement)
Timeline: Quick turnaround aligned with album release

The Challenge

As a major independent artist with a fast-growing cult following, Jean Dawson was dealing with a fragmented digital presence. Multiple third-party domains were attempting to capitalize on branded search traffic, while access to his original website was limited.

At the same time, a new album release was approaching fast.

The site needed to become:

  • The official source of truth for fans

  • The place where that artist’s music lives

  • A hub for updates, touring, and future drops

  • A digital expression that felt undeniably on brand

The real challenge wasn’t simply building an artist’s website. It was creating something that felt modern, culturally fluent, and intentional, without slipping into something over-designed, label-driven, or generic. And it all had to happen on a compressed timeline.

The Strategy

We approached JeanDawsonOfficial.com as a digital home base, not a promotional microsite.

The strategy centered on three core ideas:

1. Authority Through Ownership
With unofficial domains and third-party platforms competing for attention, the site needed to clearly signal legitimacy; visually, structurally, and experientially. We needed to anchor the brand in one definitive destination.

2. Artist-First Experience
Music, visuals, and mood came first. Navigation, CTAs, and structure were intentionally restrained, designed to support discovery without disrupting the aesthetic or pulling focus away from the art.

3. Release-Ready Infrastructure

The platform had to support the moment and what comes after it. That meant building something flexible enough to handle:

  • Album releases

  • Fan updates and email signups

  • Tour discovery

  • Future content and merch expansions

All while staying lightweight, fast, and mobile-first.

The Execution

Design & Brand Translation
The visual direction leaned into restraint. A dark, minimal UI with intentional white space allowing the album artwork, typography, and mood to lead. Nothing flashy. Nothing forced. The site feels experimental, gritty, and modern, mirroring Jean’s brand.

Music as the Anchor
Music was positioned as the primary entry point. Streaming access and album visibility were treated as core elements.

Touring & Fan Connection
Upcoming shows were easy to find without cluttering the experience. Email signup was integrated naturally, offering fans a way to stay connected without interrupting the flow.

Built for Speed & Change
The site was designed, built, and launched on a compressed timeline, aligned tightly with the album release schedule. Just as importantly, the structure allows the site to evolve alongside future releases without requiring a rebuild.

Optimization as the Official Hub

Beyond design and structure, the site was intentionally optimized to establish JeanDawsonOfficial.com as the authoritative digital hub for everything related to the artist.

Rather than chasing aggressive SEO tactics or keyword-heavy content, optimization focused on clarity, legitimacy, and signal alignment. Making it unmistakable to both fans and platforms that this is the official destination.

Key considerations included:

  • Clear brand and entity signals
The site architecture, metadata, and content hierarchy were designed to reinforce the official association between the artist, the music, and the domain, reducing confusion caused by third-party merch and tour sites.

  • Centralized discovery paths
Music, tour dates, and updates all point back to one core experience. This helps consolidate traffic, data, and engagement instead of fragmenting it across multiple platforms and domains.

  • Search and platform readiness
The site was structured to support long-term discoverability, giving search engines, streaming platforms, and social previews consistent signals about what the site represents and why it matters.

  • Data foundation for future growth
Email signups and fan interactions were built in from day one, allowing the site to begin functioning not just as a destination, but as a system for understanding and engaging the audience over time.

The Result

JeanDawsonOfficial.com launched as a clear, official artist hub. A single destination where fans can experience Jean Dawson’s world without distraction.

The site:

  • Clarified where fans should go for official information

  • Created space for the music and visuals to lead the experience

  • Supported a high-stakes album release without friction

  • Established a scalable foundation for future growth

Rather than feeling like a campaign asset, the site feels like a permanent home or an extension of the artist.

What This Project Reinforced

  • Ownership beats reach. In a fragmented digital landscape, official hubs matter more than ever.

  • Design is strategy. For culture-driven brands, aesthetic decisions are business decisions.

  • Constraints create clarity. Tight timelines force focus when teams trust the process.
